How to Keep Students Engaged in Online Classes
Students go quiet in an online class long before they go missing. By the time you notice, the room has usually been passive for several minutes and the thread you were building has gone. The fix is a schedule, and the schedule is measured in minutes.
How do you keep students engaged in online classes?
Plan an interaction every four to six minutes and rotate which kind you use. The interaction has to demand something from every student rather than offer an opening to one volunteer, and it has to be cheap enough that running it does not cost you the lesson.
Four to six minutes is a working interval, not a law of attention. It sits below the point where recorded video starts losing people, and above the point where asking for a response every couple of minutes becomes background noise the class learns to ignore.
It also matches how our own tooling thinks. Sonacove’s class engagement panel counts a student as active if they produced any signal in the last two minutes, marks them away after three minutes of nothing at all, and nudges the teacher after five minutes of holding the floor with nobody else speaking. Five minutes is where a quiet room stops being a pause and starts being a problem.
Is the ten-minute attention span real?
No. Nicholas Bradbury reviewed the primary literature for Advances in Physiology Education in 2016 and found the widely repeated ten to fifteen minute limit is not supported by the studies it gets attributed to. His most consistent finding was that variation in student attention comes from differences between teachers, not from the format of the lesson.
What the evidence does support is more useful anyway. Bunce, Flens and Neiles had chemistry students report their own attention lapses with clickers, and found engagement alternates between attention and non-attention in cycles that shorten as a lecture runs on. The same study found clicker questions and demonstrations produced significantly lower reported attention decline than lecture alone (Journal of Chemical Education, 2010).
Two other numbers are worth carrying. Guo, Kim and Rubin analysed 6.9 million video sessions on edX and found engagement dropped sharply once a video ran past six minutes (Learning at Scale, 2014). Freeman’s meta-analysis of 225 studies found average failure rates of 34 percent under traditional lecturing against 22 percent under active learning (PNAS, 2014).
None of that hands you an interval for a live lesson. It gives you a direction, and four to six minutes is where we landed.
Which interactions are cheap enough to run every few minutes?
Reactions and chat. A reaction sweep costs about ten seconds and gives you a rough split between the students following you and the ones already lost, and a chat answer collected from everyone at once costs under a minute and gives you every answer rather than the fastest one. Polls, whiteboard turns and breakout tasks are worth more but cost more, so they anchor a lesson instead of punctuating it.
Keyboard shortcuts are what make reactions usable at this cadence. In Sonacove, Alt and T sends a thumbs up, Alt and C claps, Alt and L laughs, and R on its own raises or lowers a hand. A student who has to find the toolbar, hover a button, wait for a menu to open and then pick an emoji will do it twice in an hour, not nine times.
Two of the reactions exist for pacing rather than applause. The turtle is Alt and Z for slow down, the rabbit is Alt and F for speed up. Tell the class in the first lesson that both are always allowed and never rude, then watch for them, because a turtle arriving mid-explanation is the most useful signal an online room will give you. It is the one thing a student will not interrupt to say out loud.

The whiteboard row earns its cost when you are teaching a procedure. A canvas shows a thing being made, a shared screen shows a thing already finished, and for anything with steps the making is the lesson.
What fixes each specific engagement problem?
Match the intervention to the cause, because one symptom has several. A silent class where nobody wants to go first needs the opposite move from a class where four confident students answer everything. The table below is the mapping we would defend, with the mistake that usually cancels each fix.

Turn-taking is the row most often solved with the wrong tool. Moderator-only unmute looks tidy on paper and puts you in the path of every single question, which is covered in more detail in managing a noisy online classroom.
How do you run a poll without stopping the lesson dead?
Set the voting window before you open it, and say the number out loud. Sonacove offers one, two, five and ten minute windows plus an open-ended option that runs until you close it, and the open-ended option is the one that quietly eats lessons. For a mid-lesson comprehension check, one minute is the right setting.
The pattern that earns those ninety seconds is the same question twice, once before you teach a concept and once after. The first run surfaces the misconceptions actually present in your class rather than the ones in the textbook, and the second tells you whether your explanation moved them. Do cameras-on rules actually raise engagement?
Not reliably, and they cost something. Jeremy Bailenson argued in Technology, Mind, and Behavior in 2021 that video calls impose loads that in-person conversation does not, including sustained close-range eye contact and the constant sight of your own face. A camera mandate buys the appearance of attention and pays for it in fatigue.
Our own scoring takes the same view. In the class engagement panel, continuous camera time earns one point every two minutes, a completed speaking turn earns five, and a raised hand earns three. Camera time scores lowest of everything we count, because it is the easiest signal to produce without participating.
There is a narrow version worth keeping. Ask for cameras on for the first two minutes so you can take a visual register, and inside breakout rooms, where a group of four genuinely needs faces to work. Outside those two windows, let it go.
How do you reach the students who never say anything?
Give them a channel that does not require taking the floor, then use it deliberately. Chat, reactions and polls all let a quiet student answer without speaking, and a breakout room of three is small enough that silence becomes noticeable in a way a class of twenty never is. The error is treating all silence as one condition, because anxiety and absence need opposite responses.
Our engagement panel separates the two. A student with no signal of any kind for three minutes is marked away, while a student who reacts and votes but never speaks stays active and shows up in a different column. There is a ninety second grace period at the start of a session so that late joiners are not flagged before they have had a chance to do anything.
For a student who has gone quiet, send a private chat message rather than a public prompt. When you do bring them back in, ask a question you already know they can answer, and do it two lessons running. Public competence changes the pattern where encouragement does not.
How do you tell whether the cadence is working?
Read speaker time instead of your impression of the lesson. Press T in a Sonacove meeting to open Participants Stats, which lists everyone in the room with how long they held the floor. If you are above seventy percent of total speaking time in a lesson you designed to be interactive, the design did not survive the delivery.
The engagement panel keeps a class pulse across the last five minutes and shows a recap at the end of the session with the top speaker, the chattiest student and the most reactions. Use the recap as a record of who took part. Read it out as a leaderboard and you convert a quiet student’s bad week into a public result.
One caution about asking the students directly. Deslauriers and colleagues randomly assigned physics students to active and passive versions of the same content, and found the active group learned more while rating their own learning lower (PNAS, 2019). An end-of-term satisfaction survey will not settle whether the cadence worked, and it may point you in the wrong direction.
