How to Use Polls in Online Teaching
In a room you read the class. Four students stop writing, one frowns, one glances at a neighbour’s page, and you slow down without deciding to. Online you get a grid of thumbnails, half of them cameras-off, and none of that reaches you.
Using polls in online teaching is the cheapest way to get that information back. Not as an activity to break up the hour, as an instrument: a poll answers “did that land?” in about a minute, with a number attached.
How do you use polls in online teaching?
Open the chat panel, start a poll, write one question with between two and ten options, and let the class vote. Results appear live for everyone as votes arrive. The pattern worth building on is asking the same question twice, before you teach a concept and after, so you can see what changed instead of guessing.

An open poll also sits as a card at the top of the chat panel, so a student not watching chat still sees it. You or any moderator can end it early, and that closure survives a reload, so latecomers see a finished poll. Students can create polls by default, and a moderator can switch that off.
What is the before and after poll pattern?
Ask the identical question twice, once immediately before you explain something and once immediately after. The first vote tells you where to pitch the explanation. The second tells you whether the explanation worked, which is a different thing from whether it sounded good.
Say you are teaching “I have lived here for three years” against “I lived here for three years”. You put up four sentences and ask which is correct, and eleven of twenty-six get it.
Teach for six minutes, run the same poll with the same wording, and get twenty-two. That gap is the only real evidence the six minutes did anything.
Peer Instruction, documented by Catherine Crouch and Eric Mazur in the American Journal of Physics in 2001, poses a conceptual question, has students argue it out with a neighbour, then asks the same question again. The second vote is the measurement.
Four things that second vote can tell you:
- It jumps. Move on, and note the students still on a wrong option.
- It barely moves. Your explanation missed. Re-teach it differently rather than louder.
- The first vote was already high. You were about to spend ten minutes on something the class had.
- It splits between two options. Two competing mental models are in the room, and naming both out loud usually fixes it.
Paul Black and Dylan Wiliam defined formative assessment in Inside the Black Box as anything producing information used as feedback to change teaching already under way. A poll counts only if you will change the next ten minutes because of it.
Which poll types suit which teaching goals?
A confidence check, a misconception probe and an exit ticket all look like four options on a screen, but the options are built on different logic. Decide what you want to learn, then write the options backwards from it.

Does it matter whether poll results are anonymous?
Yes, and it changes what the poll measures more than any other setting. A student who believes their name sits next to “I did not follow that” picks the safe option, and you get a tidy result that means nothing. Anonymity does not make students honest, it removes the reason to be dishonest.
Sonacove Meets attributes votes. Each option in the chat feed carries small avatars of the people who chose it, hovering one gives the name, and the record afterwards lists who voted for what. That helps on a knowledge check, when you want to know which four students to follow up with. It works against you the moment the question asks someone to admit something.
Zoom is better on this one point. Its per-poll setting to require answers to be anonymous reports every participant as “Anonymous”, which is the right default for a confidence question. As of August 2026 Sonacove has no equivalent toggle.
So write around it, which is better practice anyway. Replace “Did you understand? Yes / No” with “Which step should I redo? Setting up the equation / Clearing the fraction / The last two lines / Nothing, keep going”. Every option names a step instead of a failure, so nobody loses face voting honestly, and the winner points at something you can re-teach. An online whiteboard is usually where you go next, since the poll has named the line to start redrawing from.
When in the lesson should you run a poll?
At every point where you would otherwise ask “does that make sense?”. That question is worthless online, because silence reads identically whether the class followed you or gave up four minutes ago. Place polls at the end of each distinct idea rather than on a fixed timer.
One thing to know about live results: the tally updates for everyone as votes arrive, so students voting late see which option is winning, and some will follow it. When the distribution is the point, set a one minute window so voting is close to simultaneous.
Polls are one instrument among several for keeping students engaged in online classes, and they work best where the class already answers you.
What can you do with poll results after the class?
Poll results stay attached to the meeting record, so you can reopen last week’s numbers before teaching the same material again. Each poll keeps its question, launch time, vote count and percentage per option, and the voters behind each one. Poll participation also feeds the engagement score shown against each student.
The most useful artefact there is the first-vote distribution. If most of last term’s class picked the same wrong option before you taught the concept, that is where this term’s lesson starts. One reading gotcha: on a multiple-selection poll, percentages are calculated against distinct voters, so they can add up past 100.
The engagement score is a weighted blend of seven signals, poll participation being 15 percent of it, so read it as an indicator rather than a grade. It is good for surfacing the student who attends every session, keeps the camera off, and has never once voted.
What do you need in place before polls work?
A poll only produces a real signal if every student can join without friction and already has the habit of responding to you. Fix both first. After that a poll is a faster, quieter version of a hand going up.
- Every student can join on the device they own, so the result is not a survey of who got in
- A stated rule that everyone votes, with a “not sure” option, so silence is not the easy path
- Options written before the lesson, not typed live while twenty people wait
- One question per poll, because a poll asking two things measures neither
- A decision made in advance about what you do if the result is bad
